If the power goes out, what is the ONE standard household appliance you’re most concerned about? If your answer is the refrigerator and freezer, you’re correct. When you’re investing in a generator, you’ll want one to cover everything that’s crucial in your house, with the refrigerator/freezer at the top of your list. You don’t want to worry about all of your perishable food going bad when the power goes out. That could easily be hundreds of dollars you’ll have to throw away. Here’s how to determine the best generator for keeping your perishables safe.

How to determine the wattage?

Every electrical appliance has a certain amount of wattage it needs to operate. Full-sized refrigerators have a higher wattage because they need to run 24/7 to keep the food from going bad. A refrigerator needs about 1,000 to 2,000 starting watts to stay on. In that case, your generator should be able to handle at least 2,000 watts, especially if you have a separate freezer. If you can though, try to get over 2,000 watts to give yourself a little wiggle room.

Could a generator damage the fridge?

There are definitely sensitive electrical devices out there that have issues with generators. For example, laptops, computers, home audio systems, etc. sometimes have issues with the connection isn’t correct, there’s too much power, or other similar issues. Thankfully, your refrigerator isn’t like that. It’s built to be able to handle high wattages that might come off a portable generator. Why Won’t My Generator Start?!

Hurricane season, closely followed by winter, can promote frequent power outages in your area. Being without power under normal situations is difficult to deal with, but if you have a medical reason to need power, such as an oxygen tank, it’s scary not knowing if the electricity will cooperate during the storm. Plus, with winter coming faster than you think, you definitely don’t want to be without heat for any length of time. Going out to start your generator, only to discover it’s not turning on is also frustrating. Thankfully, there are a few common reasons why it might not start that can be fixed relatively easily. Regardless, before the colder weather, it’s always a good idea to give Automated Home Generators a call for routine maintenance. Here are a few reasons as to why your generator may not start:

Dead Battery: Having a dead battery is the most common reason why your generator won’t start. If you’ve had your generator for a while, there’s a strong chance that the battery has stopped working. You can either jump start it or have it recharged.
Low Oil Level: Check the oil! If it’s too low, then your generator cannot start. Check the crankcase to see where the oil level is at and add more if necessary. Make sure the generator is also level. When it’s unlevel, the oil sensor can get triggered even if the crankcase is full.
Clogged Fuel Valve: After checking to make sure there’s enough oil, but it still won’t start, move onto the fuel valve, or the fuel line. Its job is to distribute the fuel through the generator. If the fuel valve or the fuel line is clogged with dirt or other impurities from the fuel, nothing is getting through. Check the line by removing the outlet hose from the intake to make sure everything is flowing properly. If your generator has a fuel filter, that might need to get changed out.

Generators are excellent tools that take up the slack when the power goes out. Unfortunately, they can be annoying to listen to for an extended period. Most generators, even the Generac brand we offer, have a loud sound that can overload the senses. Thankfully there are a few ways such as a muffler or even a box you can use to help dull the sound, so it’s not as insulting to your family and neighbor’s ears. None of these methods will eliminate the noise, but it will dull it to a reasonable level. Here’s what you can get:

● A Soundproof Box – Whether you have a permanent generator along the side of the building or put the portable one in the same spot, a box might be the most straightforward answer. You do have to be careful, though. Generators will overheat without the right airflow. When you’re creating this box, you have to add insulation and cut out holes for the ventilation ducts. The box can be on a raised platform as well! This will prevent the vibrations from the sound waves of the generator from transmitting through the ground.

● Use Sound Deflectors – Depending on where your generator is located, a sound deflector might be all you need. If you have your generator installed in a shed, the sound deflectors will help decrease the noise. By the time it reaches anyone in the house, the sound will be greatly reduced. The room can also act as a soundproof box.

● Use A Muffler – A muffler for a generator is the same idea as a muffler on a car or truck. Generators have a muffler already installed, but sometimes it’s not enough. You can purchase a larger muffler to help reduce the sound significantly.

● Use A Rubber Mat – Rubber is fantastic at absorbing sound and movement. Putting your portable generator on a rubber mat or installing rubber feet can make a lot of difference, reducing how far the sound travels.

If you have faulty wiring or appliances, there might be an overload that could cause an issue. Thankfully, electrical fires can be avoided pretty easily. Here are five ways to prevent electrical fires.

1. Faulty Appliances: Appliances are the most common causes of a fire. Never use them if the power cord is frayed or worn out. There’s no protection around those wires which can spark or send heat through the cord. If it’s on a floor, rug, near a curtain, or any other combustible surface fire can break out.

2. Light Fixtures: Have you ever tried to change a bulb that just blew? It’s scorching to the touch because of how much electricity it needs to work. The higher the wattage is for a bulb, the brighter the bulb will be, and the more power it requires. Lamps and light fixtures have a limit of how high of a bulb that can be used. 3. Extension Cords: Extension cords can be beneficial as long as they’re used correctly. Unfortunately, they’re misused quite often. Extension cords are meant to be a temporary solution. They should not be used as a permanent source, especially if the appliance uses more electricity. An electrician can add more outlets throughout the house to accommodate what you need.

4. Space Heaters: Space heaters are great if you want to warm the room up a little without turning on the house’s primary heat. The issue is that people often have them too close to combustible items like a blanket, couches, rugs, curtains, and more. Even if they’re behind a cover, the space heaters with exposed coils can get hot enough to start a fire. Get a radiator-style heater that distributes the heat throughout the entire unit instead of focusing on one area. While it’s safe that a coil space heater, keep it clear of combustible items.

5. Wiring & Outlets: The outlet might be outdated with old or worn-out wiring. There could be a fault in the outlet itself or a switch that could cause a spark. Outdated wiring can be hazardous, especially in this electric-heavy time. If the wiring is over 20 years old, chances are it can’t handle things like computers, smart TVs, air conditioners, game consoles, and more. If the breaker box is original with the wiring, it may not trip with an overload resulting in a fire.

Breaking In Your Generator: What You Need To Know

When you get a brand new generator, whether it be a portable one or one permanently attached to the building, you can’t simply attach it and expect it to work. Just like any other machine or device you need to break it in so everything has a chance to warm up and get going. This step allows for the oil, lubricant, and fuel to get into the unit; which is crucial if you want your generator to last. It could easily add thousands of hours to the lifespan of your generator. With that being said, how do you properly break in your generator? Here’s what you need to know:

What exactly does it mean to “break it in?”

Basically, it’s a control run for the machine. It gets everything lubricated and allows the cylinder walls to grind down to the perfect level they need to be. It also flushes away any metal from that grinding.

Why is it so important?

Without the proper lubrication, the engine could have a “dry start” which could cause a lot of damage. It might also cause the engine to settle incorrectly allowing carbon to build up over time. This will result in a leak from poorly sealed areas or the pistons not working being cause of low pressure. In addition to that, the metal bits that came from the cylinder grinding down could get into the engine causing a lot of damage.

How do you break in a generator?

The first thing to do is to read the manual from the manufacturer. They will have specific instructions for the model you have. They may even have their own version of how to break the generator in. This is a generic how-to guide, so make sure you follow the instructions from the manufacturer.

You’re going to need manufacturer brands of:

Oil
Fuel
Oil Conditioner

1. Step One: Take the spark plug out, add a few drops of oil into it, and slowly pull the starter cord about five to ten times. Don’t pull hard enough to start the engine though. This method is purely to get the pistons lubricated. Put the spark plug back afterward.

2. Step Two: In the crankcase, add the oil conditioner and then the oil. You’ll have to consult with the manual on how much to add each.

3. Step Three: Add the fuel according to the manual.

Note : The first time using the generator, the manual will probably tell you to fill both the oil and the gas to maximum levels. This will make sure everything in the generator is properly lubricated and ready to go. Do not overfill either one though.

4. Step Four: During the first run, have the generator on for an hour with nothing attached to it. Just let the generator do what it needs to do to fully break in. Once the time is up, drain out all of the oil and refill it again. The oil that drains out will be dirty because it helped clean out everything in the generator.

5. Step Five: (Optional) Do a second run. This step isn’t always needed, but some manufacturers recommend it. If the manual specifically says to do a second run, do it.

6. Step Six: Run the generator with a 500-watt load.

Don’t Take Chances! Avoid Risks At Home

● Portables: The portable generator is mainly for an emergency. It’s not designed to supply power to your whole house.
